In Monday’s issue of the journal Nature Medicine researchers describe a new link between disturbed blood flow and blood clotting. As blood flows over an obstruction it affects the way platelets (cells that form blood clots) behave. “Think of it like a plane wing” said biologist and lead author Warwick Nesbitt of Monash University. “As the air is flowing over the top of the wing it has to increase in speed and then it decreases on the other side. Until now it was thought that only proteins released into the bloodstream after an injury led to platelets clumping together.
