The demand for medicine could also be as destructive to natural vegetation and habitats as the quest for food, in a country where traditional medicine is widely used and has also yielded valuable compounds for use in Western treatments. The country’s total exports of traditional medicine were also worth $1. 1 billion last year. Catering to this market and the demand from an expanding and increasingly wealthy domestic population is straining areas where wild plants are gathered. Up to a fifth of medicinal plants and animals are now considered endangered, Traffic said.

Motivating Elderly And Chronically Ill To Use Computers To Learn …
Science Daily (press release)
The most effective disease self-management systems, the study found, are those that provide the patient a complete feedback loop that includes active participation by physicians or other health professionals, a current individual assessment of the patient’s health status, and new or adjusted treatment advice when necessary. In a randomized trial of patients with hypertension, for example, 261 patients who used a Web site to report daily monitoring of blood pressure and received biweekly adjustments from a pharmacist kept better control of their blood pressure than patients in a similar sized group who simply monitored their blood pressure and had online access to their medical records and another group who only had a routine briefing on the dangers of hypertension and also had online access to their records. "As the Institute of Medicine’s 2001 report, ‘Crossing the Quality Chasm,’ made clear, the widespread adoption of many IT applications will require behavioral adaptations on the part of large numbers of clinicians, organizations and patients," said Jimison. "Although health IT has the potential to empower the elderly, the chronically ill and the underserved to be more active in the care process, our study shows there are significant usability and accessibility issues. More than a quarter of all American adults have no online presence, according to a Pew survey. The elderly are at a particular disadvantage. Their needs are seldom explicitly considered by designers of software and hardware technology and they need to be.

Natural Medicine: Feel the burn: Chiles and your health

Chile peppers have more to offer than just spice — they’re also full of a variety of vitamins, minerals and other beneficial compounds. Chiles are the fruit of the Capsicum annuum plant, and they are the most widely grown spice in the world. Before the discovery of chiles, the only known “hot” spices in Europe and Asia were black pepper and horseradish. Chile peppers are rich in ascorbic acid and vitamin E, which are strong antioxidants; potassium, which keeps the heart healthy; and carotenoids, which are good for the eyes. They also contain flavonoids, which give fruits and vegetables their vibrant colors, aromas and flavors.

nullWestern-trained physicians and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners may or may not see eye to eye on their health-giving claims. However, confidence in the efficacy of these mostly plant-based remedies is rooted in folklore. After all, nature holds the secrets to good health, it is said. Since their early discovery, the roots of the wild ginseng plant have been conferred extraordinary healing powers. The snow lotus, found on the remote slopes of the eastern Himalayas, has near mythical medicinal 'powers'.

Frozen embryos ‘may create healthier babies’

Babies born after embryos were frozen and defrosted were less likely to be small at birth, to be born prematurely or to die in the first few days, according to research presented at the American Society of Reproductive Medicine conference in San Francisco. Typical IVF treatment involves removing eggs and fertilising them in the laboratory with sperm and then implanting one or two embryos a couple of days later in the womb. The remaining embryos are frozen for use if the ‘fresh’ cycle fails but many primary care trusts do not include the frozen cycle as part of the couple’s free treatment available on the NHS. Guidelines from the National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence say that couples should be offered three fresh cycles and as many frozen ones as they have embryos for on the NHS. The findings could be significant in encouraging primary care trusts to offer frozen cycles, as they appear to be beneficial to the child.
