The advent of the “miracle of medicine” has rapidly antiquated once lethal illnesses and rendered common health sense a prudish practice. Confidence in salubrious science is now ironically ubiquitous, despite a persistent skepticism in science’s more uncomfortable ideas. It doesn’t matter if we quite understand it; give us your best shot, nature. What could possibly hurt? Besides misguided notions of medicine, of course. We’ll go ahead and act like that isn’t too problematic. It shouldn’t be too melodramatic to consider medicine the ultimate embodiment of human intellect, empathy and devotion to elevating the human condition. Despite this very real power, misconceptions have done their part in rousing particularly intimidating hurdles in the health care industry.
