Ferritin works by sequestering iron from cells. When it is overexpressed, iron uptake increases, causing signal changes in the surrounding environment that can be detected by MRI, without the need to administer an additional substance. As recently described in the journal Nature Medicine, ferritin has so far successfully broadcast live reports via MRI detection from the liver, endothelial cells and even during fetal development in pregnant mice, without the need for additional substances. In some cases, this gene-based approach may even save lives by identifying people who are likely to develop a fatal reaction to a drug. Pharmacogenomics will be part of the next revolution in medicine, says Francis Collins, Director of National Human Genome Research Institute, Washington. Doctors will soon routinely test patients to ensure that the drugs they take really are the best indicated for them. However, consumers are not the only ones who stand to benefit from such personalised medicine; it will also boost the profit of drug companies as well if they really understand this phenomenon. Biotech companies expect to sell genetic test kits, and drug companies hope to increase the number of medications that survive clinical trials and are eventually marketed. If it is be identified as to who would benefit from a drug that could be promoted for a defined segment of the population then it would also make it easier to show it is safe and effectiveness, said Brian Spear, Director of Pharmacogenomics at Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago… In fact, drug companies have already begun collecting DNA samples from people who participate in their clinical trials. The prospects of customised medicines drew corporate researchers to New York for a conference on pharmacogenomics some time ago and the proceedings were published in a special issue of Nature Biotechnology (Vol. Skilled physicians realise that each patient responds to a drug in a different manner. The education and training for dermatologists and dermatologic surgeons involves at least four years of postgraduate residency training in programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This includes at least one year of training in internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, or another ACGME-approved broad-based program, followed by at least three years of intensive training in dermatology including dermatopathology and dermatologic surgery. To become board-certified, dermatologists also must pass a certifying examination given by the American Board of Dermatology, a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Dermatologic surgeons also may participate in post-graduate surgical fellowships lasting one to two years. Beyond this, dermatologists and dermatologic surgeons engage in continuing medical education (CME) throughout their careers (in fact, almost every state requires a minimum number of CME hours per year for relicensure). How many of these cosmetic surgery procedures has the physician performed? What results can be expected? Scientists argue that at least 54 percent forest cover is required to sustain the ecological services (water supply, soil nutrient, maintenance of oxygen, flood protection, etc. ) derived from the forests. As of 1999, Environmental Science for Social Change (ESSC) estimates that 37 percent, or 2,556,837 hectares, of the country’s remaining forests will be subjected to mining operations. Deforestation is the major cause of soil erosion and landslides resulting to the sedimentation of our rivers and the siltation of our dams. Rehabilitation of water harvesting facilities and deep wells are necessary but the root of the problem goes beyond infrastructures. If our present government will not rethink its economic growth strategy that favors private commercial exploitation of great portions of our natural resources, basic needs such as food, water, shelter and medicine will never be adequately met.
