Forbes - Sep 25, 2006
Both moves were intended as medicine for the post-split drop in Viacom’s stock price, and were called responses to shareholder concerns. But after Redstone slammed Cruise’s inarguably zany behavior as “creative suicide,” some critics in turn lambasted the chairman for overlooking the very un-erratic nature of Cruise’s box office returns. Dealing with stress in school, at work

Gautamadas, a consultant on neuro behavioural medicine and stress management. He was speaking on `Child Burnout and the BPO Syndrome’, a lecture organised by the Public Relations Society of India. Dr Gautamadas quoted a recent survey that found private schools were more stressful than government schools. “The perception of stress increases with age, along with the urge to perform. And stress has a negative impact on performance… Dr Gautamadas said that the school system in India is itself stressful as it is based on marks. He listed other factors — the information overload, a lot of which is unnecessary, career selection done by ambitious parents who are trying to live out their fantasies through their children and the activity craze, where a child is pushed to keep busy with school and classes through the day. On the BPO and call centre culture, he said that the nature of the job has led to a change in social and family life, with its high incomes, irregular hours and highly stressful nature. He said that once institutions acknowledge stress as a problem, they must identify the reasons for it and address the issues. For example, they should provide health friendly conditions, client friendly supervisors and counselling services, he said. “Stress comes with a stigma. It is equated with poor performance so employees don’t like to admit it,” pointed out Dr Gautamadas.
